Using Kubyl

Pod file browser

Two-pane file manager between your machine and a container.

Press F on a pod, or use the Files tab in the details panel. It is a two-pane file manager, your machine on one side and the container on the other, with a transfer queue at the bottom showing progress, speed, ETA and history.

What you can do

  • Upload, download and copy between panes. Drag and drop between panes, drop files from your OS onto the pod pane, or drag files out.
  • Preview text (up to files.preview_limit_kb, 256 KB) and images under 20 MB.
  • Edit files in place (under 5 MB), delete, rename, create folders, change permissions and copy paths.
  • Conflicts offer a keep both choice.

Dragging files out to the OS works on macOS and Wayland only (not Windows or X11). It stages regular files up to 32 MB when the drag starts, and not from Secret mounts. For folders, bigger files and other platforms use Download to….

  • Header. Your machine's side has bookmarks. The container side has a breadcrumb, a container picker, a capability chip such as *tar available · /bin/sh* and chips for mounts such as *ConfigMap · read-only* and *Secret · read-only*. Writing into a read-only mount is refused with a message naming the ConfigMap or Secret.
  • Conflicts. When a name exists, a dialog offers Skip, Keep both (a (1).yaml, the default on Enter) and Overwrite, with an option to apply the choice to the other conflicts.
  • Editing. The editor is an overlay over the browser with YAML highlighting. If the file changed in the container meanwhile, saving asks before overwriting it.
  • Delete asks for confirmation and, on production clusters, the typed name.
  • No shell. A container without a shell shows a *no shell* state with Browse through a debug container, which reuses an ephemeral kubyl-files-* busybox while it runs.
  • Narrow layout. In the details dock (under 760 px) the panes stack, only name and size show, and the queue is smaller.
  • Folder transfers show approximate percentages, because they are counted against du and local sizes. A partial download resumes only for the same remote file. Uploads extract with tar xof.

How transfers work

Folders stream as tar, single files as cat, and large files as resumable dd chunks (files.chunk_size_mb, 4 MB) named *.kubyl-part. SHA-256 verification on both sides is on by default (files.verify), with files.concurrency_per_pod (2) parallel transfers.
